This print, Vlakdecoratie met het Gehoor, was made by an anonymous artist using the intaglio process. The design is incised into a metal plate, likely copper, and then the ink is applied, wiped, and forced into the etched lines. The image is incredibly detailed, with an allegorical female figure playing a lute set within an elaborate decorative framework. Look closely, and you can see other motifs like deer and grotesque heads, all meticulously rendered. The intaglio process demands immense skill and time, and the level of refinement apparent in the work speaks to the specialized knowledge of the printmaker, who was part of a complex workshop system. Such prints circulated widely, and were an essential means of disseminating visual ideas in the early modern period. Considering its materials, making, and context deepens our understanding of the artwork, blurring the lines between fine art and craft.
