Turf 

Karl Peter Burnitz created this work, titled 'Turf', with a pencil on paper. Burnitz, who lived in Frankfurt during the 19th century, situated himself in a period of burgeoning industrialization. Burnitz’s decision to focus on a simple patch of grass, rather than the changing urban landscape, speaks volumes. In a time when art academies were focused on history and portrait painting, Burnitz turned his attention to the mundane. The intense scrutiny which Burnitz brings to his subject is a conscious decision to depict a different type of narrative. With this study, Burnitz asks the viewer to consider what is deemed worthy of attention. 'Turf' reflects a deliberate choice to find value in the ordinary, suggesting a quiet, personal rebellion against the norms of his time.
