Jose Davila made this large sculpture called Zimbabue (amarillo), and the yellow part is what catches my eye. It's this clean stripe cutting across the form, like a horizon line in a landscape, but also like a painter just taped off an area for a hard-edged color block. It's both/and. The sculpture is striking and a bit awkward. It's rough and monumental, but also seems precarious, as if it might tip over. That yellow line emphasizes this tension. It draws your eye across the surface, highlighting the interplay between the dark planes and the surrounding space. Davila’s process seems to be about setting up these formal relationships, creating a dialogue between material, space, and color. It's a bit like some of Richard Serra's work, playing with weight, gravity, and our perception of space. But there's also something playful about Davila's approach, a willingness to embrace imperfection and ambiguity. Art isn't about answers, it’s about a conversation.
