Editor: This is a mural called "Legs," created by Allen Jones. It's quite striking, and also feels like an advertisement. What can you tell me about the context and materials used? Curator: Well, consider the billboard itself as a crucial material. It exists within a very specific economy of signage and public consumption. Jones is manipulating and critiquing that very system. Where does art end and advertising begin here, or vice-versa? Editor: So it's less about the paint and more about the whole environment it creates? That's something I hadn't considered. Curator: Exactly. It prompts us to consider the labor of creation, but also the labor of seeing and consuming. It's the billboard that is the material.
