F. Ockerse made this drawing of a man strangling a hunter with a firearm using ink and graphite on paper. The artist uses a limited palette of black ink and pale blue washes to create a dynamic composition with stark contrasts and dramatic energy. The bold and graphic style, along with the use of strong lines, gives the artwork a sense of urgency. The figures in the image are rendered with swift strokes, almost cartoonish in their exaggerated features and poses. The strangling man's muscular form is contrasted with the more slender hunter. Notice how the artist captures the tension in their bodies as they struggle, and how the weapon becomes a symbol of power and oppression, used against its owner. The spidery quality of the leafless tree in the upper left creates an eerie contrast to the fleshy figures enacting a life-or-death drama. The scene is reminiscent of some of Picasso’s more political works. The image invites us to question our assumptions about conflict, resistance, and the human condition.
