Pablo Picasso created “Antes” with crayon and pencil to capture the essence of a man who seems to be walking with great purpose. Looking at this work, one cannot help but think about Picasso’s Spanish identity and how it shaped his artistic vision. The figure exudes a certain confidence and perhaps even a touch of arrogance, characteristics that might reflect societal expectations of masculinity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, there’s also something almost caricaturish about the portrayal, suggesting a critical perspective. Is Picasso challenging the traditional representations of male authority, or is he simply capturing the essence of a particular individual he encountered in the vibrant milieu of his time? Picasso once said, "Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not.” This piece serves as a reminder of how identity, history, and personal experience are interwoven in the creation and reception of art, urging us to look beyond the surface and consider the complexities within.
