Constantin Brâncuși made "View of the Artist's Studio" with oil on canvas sometime around 1918, and it's a super chill space, right? The mark-making is straightforward, almost like he's sketching with paint. The colors are muted, tending toward grays and browns with a hint of warmth, which adds to the calm. You can feel the materiality of the paint, not too thick, not too thin, just enough to give it a presence. It's cool how the flat planes of color build the forms; look at the way the reddish figure stands in the center, almost like a simplified human form. It reminds me a bit of Giorgio Morandi, who also painted studio scenes. Brâncuși embraces ambiguity here; nothing is too defined, leaving room for our interpretations. It's less about what's in the studio and more about the feeling of being in a creative space.
