William Bradford created "Fishing Fleet off Labrador" as an atmospheric painting. The composition is structured around contrasts: between the cold, monumental icebergs and the warm, diffused sunset; and between the stillness of the water and the delicate textures of the sky and the distant, rocky shore. The use of light and shadow gives depth and volume to the icebergs, making them almost tangible. Bradford, like other artists of his time, used the sublime in nature to inspire awe and reflection, and to negotiate the place of the human within the immensity of the natural world. The small fishing boats against the colossal iceberg suggests a semiotic relationship: the vulnerability of man against the power of nature. Note how Bradford has carefully modulated the sky and water with thin layers of paint to capture the ethereal quality of light. The painting explores themes of scale and perception, inviting a contemplation on the relationship between humanity and the environment.
