Cathrine Edlinger-Kunze created this artwork, "Color Crimson in my eyes" with oil during the 20th century. The woman’s gesture, a hand shielding her eyes, carries echoes of countless figures from antiquity to modernity. We see it in depictions of Psyche peering into the forbidden box, or the motif of a blindfolded figure who gains inner sight, such as Saint Lucy. This gesture, deeply rooted in human experience, speaks to the complex interplay between seeing and knowing. Across cultures, covering or shielding the eyes often signifies an encounter with something overwhelming – a divine presence, a painful truth, or an intense emotional experience. Think of Oedipus, whose literal blinding mirrors his terrible self-discovery. The subconscious pull of these archetypes affects the production and interpretation of the gesture. The act embodies both vulnerability and a desire for protection. This symbol, in its non-linear, cyclical progression, resurfaces, evolves, and takes on new meanings in different historical contexts.
