This silver medal, commemorating the death of Mary II of England, was crafted by Johannes Drappentier. The circular form is divided into two distinct scenes, each meticulously detailed in relief. On one side, Britannia kneels mournfully. The composition emphasizes a visual hierarchy, with Britannia lower than the altar with smoke that is a symbol of mourning. The scene creates a sense of somber reverence through its carefully arranged elements. The reverse side presents a celestial vision. Here, four crowned shields sit under a radiant sun, symbolizing divine authority. The shields are evenly spaced, suggesting stability. The sun’s rays, precisely etched, create a sense of ethereal light, conveying the Queen's ascent to heaven. Drappentier masterfully uses form and composition to evoke emotional and symbolic meanings. The medal serves as a philosophical reflection on power, mortality, and the divine.
