Curatorial notes

This sketch by George Hendrik Breitner captures a man, woman, and child seated at a table, rendered with a hurried intimacy. Observe the table acting as the focal point, a place of gathering. The symbolism of the table extends back through time. In ancient Roman and Greek cultures, communal tables were emblematic of kinship and civic duty. Fast forward, in the context of the Last Supper, the table becomes associated with sacrifice and spiritual communion. Here, the act of sharing a meal transforms the mundane into the sacred. Despite its loose execution, the sketch exudes warmth, with the family gathered together at the table. It conveys a sense of belonging, subtly influencing our emotions and linking us to primal, archetypal experiences of family and community. It echoes through different eras and contexts as a fundamental aspect of human existence.
