This photograph by the Keystone Press Agency captures a moment of exchange, with Winston Churchill bestowing an honorary degree upon the American ambassador. There's something about the light here, the way it drapes over the figures, that really grabs me. It's all grayscale, but within that, there’s a whole world of tones and textures that feel almost painterly. Look at Churchill's robes, for instance: the fabric seems almost touchable with its heavy weight. But what strikes me most are the hands clasped together. The gesture is so specific, so filled with intention and connection, it makes me think about how art can be a form of touching across time, a way of reaching out and grasping something essential about human experience. It reminds me of Gerhard Richter's photo paintings, how he blurs the edges of photographs to turn them into something else, something more ambiguous and open-ended. Because really, isn't that what art is all about? Not providing answers, but inviting us to ask better questions.
