Here's Barbara Chase-Riboud, conjuring a world from graphite on paper. See how the marks swarm, dense and dark, then feather out into these delicate, spidery lines? I imagine her hand moving, a controlled frenzy, building up layer upon layer. Maybe she was thinking about weaving, or the way structures emerge from chaos. There's a real tension here, between the rigid geometry of the central form, like a skyscraper, and the loose, gestural energy that surrounds it. I feel this push and pull between order and freedom, control and abandon, which I think is so relevant to our experiences. It makes me think about Agnes Martin, and her quiet grids, or even Eva Hesse's sculptures with their combination of organic and geometric forms. There's a conversation happening between artists across time, a shared exploration of form and feeling. And it’s never really resolved, which is a great relief.
