This felt hat with feathers and ribbon by Suzanne Talbot is a little symphony of textures and muted, earthy colours. You can see the hand of the artist clearly in this piece - the felt is soft, almost like a painting surface, and the feathers are carefully arranged, each one a little brushstroke of nature. The dark brown feathers at the top create an upward surge, a dramatic flourish against the more subdued green of the felt. Then, just when you think you've got the color story figured out, there's this pop of yellow-green feathers near the base, like a playful disruption of the established order. It's easy to see echoes of the Vienna Secession in this hat - think of Klimt and his opulent use of materials, or Schiele's ability to imbue objects with psychological depth. Like them, Talbot seems to be saying that art isn't just about representation, it's about transforming the mundane into something extraordinary.
