Francis Bacon made these three studies for self-portrait using oil paint on canvas. He’s not using industrial or hi-tech materials, but paint itself is a manufactured substance, the result of a complex production process. Bacon was interested in the material qualities of paint, its capacity to be smeared, blurred, and distorted. Look closely at the brushwork here. It has an almost violent application, as though Bacon were attacking the canvas, capturing the intensity of human experience. Bacon built up the image through layers of color, texture, and form. This approach reflects his exploration of the human condition, and the materiality of paint allowed Bacon to capture the fleeting, transient nature of identity. Bacon challenges traditional boundaries, elevating the processes of painting to the level of fine art. The way Bacon works with the materials becomes part of the meaning itself.
