Pierre-Georges Jeanniot made this etching, "Vrouw met hoed in een armstoel", without a date, using delicate lines that feel both precise and spontaneous. The varying pressure of the needle brings so much to the piece, creating a range of light and dark, and that hatching is just so descriptive. I mean, look at the way he renders the fur coat. You can almost feel the plushness. Then there's the hat, kind of perched on her head, casting a shadow that makes her face all the more intriguing. The cane, is it just an accessory, or does it hint at something more? The surface is smooth but alive with tiny marks, each one contributing to the overall mood. This reminds me a little of Whistler's etchings – that same attention to detail and atmospheric quality. But Jeanniot has a slightly looser touch, maybe more playful, which invites us to imagine stories for the sitter. In the end, it's not about answers. It's about the questions that art inspires.
