Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing of a fish and six heads. The fish really stands out with its clear, simple lines, floating below a row of mysterious, shaded heads. Looking at this piece, I get a sense of the artist just letting his mind wander, as forms emerge from the page. I wonder, was he thinking about the connection between what we eat and who we are? Or was this a playful moment of stream-of-consciousness drawing, where one image led to another? I imagine him sitting in a cafe, sketchbook in hand, capturing what's around him, mixing observations with pure imagination. The quick, assured strokes of the pencil remind me of other artists who use drawing to think, like Cy Twombly. It's like they're having a conversation with the paper, each line a response to the one before. In this way, artists inspire each other, building on the ideas of those who came before, creating something new and unexpected.
