Othon Friesz made this little sketch of a kneeling woman gathering potatoes with pencil on paper. The lines are so fluid and energetic, aren't they? You can almost feel him working quickly, trying to capture the essence of the figure. I really admire how Friesz uses these bold strokes to convey both form and movement. It looks like he's building up the image through layer upon layer, shifting and refining until he finds the right balance. I can imagine him stepping back from the paper, squinting, maybe tilting his head a little, making micro-adjustments until he says ‘okay, that’s it’. It reminds me that as artists we're all wrestling with similar problems, constantly learning from each other, building upon what's come before. And it's in that messy, uncertain space that the most exciting discoveries happen. We can't know what the artist's intentions were, but we can feel it – and that's pretty amazing, right?
