These two fragments of walls were documented in the late 19th century by Gustaf Nordenskiöld, likely using ink on paper. The rough stones form the foundation of what was once someone's home, their livelihood, their life. Look at the way these stones, seemingly random, are deliberately placed. This arrangement, repeated across cultures, echoes the human need for shelter and safety. Think of the cyclopean walls of Mycenae, massive stones erected to protect a kingdom, or the Incan walls of Machu Picchu, stones fitted with such precision that they defy the passage of time. The wall: a universal symbol of protection, but also of division. From the Great Wall of China to the Berlin Wall, barriers erected to keep something—or someone—out. As you contemplate these humble fragments, consider how deeply ingrained the symbolism of the wall is in our collective consciousness. A continuous cycle of building up and breaking down. A tangible manifestation of our deepest fears and desires.
