This drawing, Marriage Marike and Anton, is by Anton Heyboer. It's rendered in delicate marks and scratchy notations. The color palette seems to be built around a range of grays and browns. I can almost imagine Heyboer making this, starting with one little line and letting the drawing slowly emerge, layer upon layer. There's an energy to it, a feeling of something being discovered in the act of creation. It looks as if the artist made a type of map or instruction on love. The marks could communicate a feeling, an intention, or a meaning. I think of other artists, like Cy Twombly, who also used writing and drawing in a similar vein, and who created their own languages to make art. These artists are in a conversation, you know, and they are exchanging ideas through time. Painting is like embodied expression. It’s embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations. It feels like you can see a whole world in it.
