Encounter

When I look at "Encounter," I am drawn into thinking about our own fragmented present and perhaps, the ghostly echoes of the past constantly vying for our attention. Is the trumpeter a memory? Or perhaps a summons? Greene cleverly makes us consider the dialogue between then and now. Editor: I see what you mean. The man in modern clothes looks almost oblivious, or maybe resigned. What is it about painting ordinary people with such intense dramatic flair? Curator: Precisely. Greene has always excelled at finding the extraordinary within the ordinary. Notice how the cool tones of the contemporary man are juxtaposed with the warm hues enveloping the trumpeter; it suggests divergent realities coexisting. Do you think it might speak about different paths meeting and diverging, right here in the urban hum of the city? Editor: That’s a neat interpretation. So, the painting is not just about seeing, but almost overhearing a conversation across time? Curator: Absolutely!
