Georges Valmier made this painting, Nature Morte No. 3, with oil on canvas, and it's really got me thinking about how we see. The colors are muted, earthy – greens, browns, reds – but they're broken up into these geometric facets, like he's taken a hammer to the scene and reassembled it. Look closely at how the light catches the edge of the teapot, how he uses tiny strokes to build up the form. It's about process as much as representation, maybe more. What does this angular approach to mark making tell us? You can almost feel Valmier wrestling with the objects, not just depicting them, but trying to understand their underlying structure. It reminds me of how Picasso and Braque were slicing up the world around the same time. This work invites us to see the world not as a collection of smooth, continuous surfaces, but as a series of fractured planes, each with its own unique perspective. It's a conversation, an argument, a dance between artist and subject.
