Curatorial notes
This is August Allebé's chalk drawing of a standing man, a figure study now residing in the Rijksmuseum's collection. Created during a time of evolving artistic representation, this work engages with the classical ideal of the male form, yet it also reflects the gaze of its time. The robust figure, depicted nude, holds a discus, reminiscent of ancient Greek athleticism, but the representation of his body also speaks to the complexities of identity and representation. We must consider how the male nude has been historically depicted and consumed, often within contexts of power and desire. Does Allebé's study challenge or reinforce traditional representations? How might contemporary viewers engage with this image? In contemplating this artwork, we might also consider our own positionality in relation to historical and artistic legacies.
