Editor: This is “Herder en herderin met geiten,” or “Shepherd and Shepherdess with Goats,” an engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert, made sometime between 1611 and 1732. It’s currently housed at the Rijksmuseum. It has a sort of idyllic, pastoral feel, even with the rather prominent goat anatomy on display! What do you see in this piece? Curator: Ah, yes, quite the contrast, isn't it? What I see here is a moment suspended. There's a tangible sense of quietude – a sort of drowsy stillness radiating from the shepherd dozing under that straw hat. And the goats, magnificent, indifferent. The engraving captures not just the scene, but the very essence of taking respite from the labor of daily existence. Do you notice how the figures are nestled almost hidden within the foliage? Editor: Yes! It almost feels like we've stumbled upon them by accident, like peeking into a secret, lazy afternoon. The composition certainly directs your eye that way. But what about the goat anatomy—was that just...part of the art? Curator: (chuckles) Well, let’s just say they were less prudish back then. Also, realism! And I wonder, could the goats’… virility… be symbolic of fecundity and pastoral bounty? Food for thought, perhaps? Editor: Definitely something to consider. I suppose every element contributes to the overall story. Thanks for illuminating that sense of the pastoral for me! Curator: My pleasure! It reminds us of the beautiful moments when we can pause, be in nature, and maybe ponder the odd beauty of a goat.
