Franklin Townsend Morgan created this evocative harbour scene using etching, a medium that lends itself beautifully to capturing light and atmosphere. Notice the masts of the ships piercing the sky; vertical lines reminiscent of ancient obelisks, symbols of aspiration and connection between the earthly and divine. These towering structures echo in the spires of cathedrals across Europe, a visual echo that speaks to our enduring quest for something beyond the material world. The sea, often a symbol of the unconscious, is rendered with a stillness that belies its depths. Like our own minds, it holds untold stories and latent possibilities. The ships, laden with potential for journeys and discoveries, stir a deep-seated desire for exploration within us. This yearning is a human constant, echoing through time from the voyages of ancient mariners to our modern-day space explorations. These symbols do not unfold in a linear fashion, but rather resurface and evolve, carrying forward the emotional and psychological imprints of generations.
