Egbert Rubertus Derk Schaap made this oil on canvas, ‘Felsenmeer’, and you can almost feel the cool air of the forest in this painting. Schaap wasn't afraid to let his process show; the brushstrokes are visible, building up layers of color and texture. The ochres and browns create an earthy, grounded feeling, while the touches of gold and yellow suggest the changing seasons. See how the paint is applied in thick, deliberate strokes, especially in the foreground? These strokes give the rocks and foliage a tangible presence, as if you could reach out and touch them. Look at the way the light filters through the trees, creating dappled shadows on the forest floor. It's a beautiful effect, achieved through careful observation and skillful paint handling. Schaap reminds me of the Impressionists, particularly Sisley, who also loved to capture the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. Both artists invite us to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. And like all great art, this painting leaves room for interpretation; it's a reminder that art is a conversation, an ongoing exchange of ideas and perspectives.
