Oleksandr Aksinin made this image, PF 1983. Dao, in 1983, and right away you get the sense of someone using art to work through something. The first thing that grabs me is this deep, enveloping black circle. It's not just flat; you can see the texture, maybe some layering, giving it depth. Then there's this silvery, curving form snaking upwards into the darkness, ending in a series of dashes, like a code, or a path that fades as it rises. I'm drawn to the way Aksinin juxtaposes this stark, almost graphic simplicity with the tactile quality of the materials. It feels like a visual koan, a little puzzle about direction and the unknown, like art is a path, not a picture. You see hints of Malevich in the abstraction, but there’s a personal, almost obsessive quality here that feels very different. It reminds you that every artist is in conversation with those that came before, but ultimately trying to find their own way.
