This painting, Oui, oui, oui, by Wols, is a wild mess of emotion made with paint, brushes, and maybe even his hands. I imagine Wols standing over the canvas, lost in thought, letting the paint flow like a river. There’s a big, dark shape looming in the middle, like a storm cloud, or a bad feeling, maybe anger. But then, there are these bright red splashes, almost like blood. There's this frenetic energy of the lines scratching across the surface, searching for some form, some reason, like he's carving his way through his mind. It reminds me of some of the early abstract expressionist painters, like Pollock, but with a European twist. Artists are always talking to each other, even across time and place. I see the conversation, all that expressive energy, all those gestures, all that "yes, yes, yes" in the face of uncertainty.
