Konstantin Korobov created this oil painting, Void, sometime after his birth in Russia in 1985. The skeletal figures and dark palette suggest themes of mortality and the transience of life. The figures, with their elongated heads, have a somewhat alien quality. This could be a commentary on the alienation of the individual in modern society, especially given the rapid social and political changes that Russia has undergone since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The use of religious imagery and a generally spiritual tone are, perhaps, indicative of a resurgence of interest in such matters after decades of state-sponsored atheism. Art history isn't just about aesthetics; it is a product of its time and place. Looking at the social and cultural context, perhaps through archival research, helps us to understand the artistic choices that Korobov made.
