Albin Egger-Lienz painted this haunting Saint Sebastian, a figure marked by arrows, symbols of spiritual and physical torment. In the canon, he is a symbol of resilience and faith. This image echoes through time, a visual echo of suffering found in ancient Greece, where arrows were associated with divine retribution, as well as healing. Think of Apollo, whose arrows could bring plague or cure disease. The arrow as a symbol is therefore charged with dualistic power. Here, the piercing arrows, combined with Sebastian’s passive, almost serene posture, evoke a deep emotional response. It transcends simple religious iconography. Instead, it taps into our collective unconscious, triggering primal fears of pain, vulnerability, and, ultimately, acceptance. This image reminds us that symbols are never static. They evolve, adapt, and resurface, carrying with them the weight of history and the power to stir our souls.
