Here's a delicate drawing of two models by Richard Diebenkorn, made with graphite on paper. It feels like the artist was really thinking through the bodies, one figure draped over the other, line by line. I can almost feel Diebenkorn’s hand moving across the page, feeling out the weight and form of the models. It’s like he’s building the figures from the inside out, not just copying what he sees but really understanding how the bodies connect. What was he thinking as he made it? Maybe he was working with the problem of showing how bodies relate to one another. The lines are so tentative and searching, and it makes me think about other artists like Giacometti, who also used line to explore the human form. Ultimately, this drawing feels like it’s part of an ongoing conversation, where each artist is building on what came before, always pushing the boundaries of seeing.
