Reinier Vinkeles made this print, "Hellemans visiting Hillegonda and her child," sometime between 1741 and 1816, now held at the Rijksmuseum. It captures a moment of domesticity laden with the social norms of its time. Here, the intersection of gender and class is palpable. We see Hillegonda, likely a representation of a nurturing mother, breastfeeding. Motherhood, and in particular breastfeeding, historically ties women to the domestic sphere. This imagery evokes a sense of natural duty but also highlights the societal expectations placed on women of the time. The visitor, Hellemans, is a figure of authority and possibly wealth. His formal attire contrasts with Hillegonda’s more modest clothing, suggesting different social strata. The contrast prompts us to consider the dynamics of power at play, the potential vulnerabilities, and the complex relationships between the individuals depicted. The scene reflects a constructed reality, and this idealized version perpetuates societal values and norms.
