Curatorial notes

Isaac Israels made this drawing, titled "Abklatsch van een tekening," on paper, and it's now in the Rijksmuseum. It’s a faint impression, like a ghost of a thought. Look closely, and you can see the pressure of the pencil, the way it barely grazes the surface. Israels isn't trying to capture a likeness; he's exploring the act of seeing itself. The texture of the paper becomes important here, the grain almost as present as the lines. It’s less about what's depicted and more about how the marks activate the space. The lines are tentative, searching, almost like the artist is feeling his way through the subject. The whole image has a lightness, an unfinished quality that invites us to fill in the gaps. It reminds me a bit of Cy Twombly's drawings, that same sense of playful, restless energy. Ultimately, it is up to us to give it meaning.
