Rijk van Lavieren made this head of a young goat as a print, sometime in the early 20th century. It's small, intimate, and full of tender observation. The whole surface has a soft, grainy texture, like it's been gently worn away by time. The image is built up through a series of fine lines, close together, describing the form of the young goat. Look at the way van Lavieren captures the gentle slope of its nose, the delicate curve of its ears! The texture is really important here, it gives the piece a tactile quality, like you could reach out and stroke the animal's soft fur. I love the way the image is framed by these tiny marks. It reminds me a bit of Paula Modersohn-Becker. But really, it’s part of an ongoing conversation about how we see, how we touch, and how we remember. Art invites us to stay curious and open to new ways of experiencing the world.
