Robert Frank made this photograph, "Men on street--Scottsboro, Alabama," using a 35mm Leica camera and black and white film. Frank’s photography is rooted in the everyday. The gritty, grainy texture of the print is due to the film and printing process used. Yet, it's more than just a snapshot. The choice of black and white lends a timeless quality, removing the distraction of color and focusing our attention on form, light, and shadow. The materiality of the print itself – the paper, the developing chemicals – all contribute to the image's physical presence. The setting of this image is significant. Here we see working-class men who perform manual labor. Their dress and posture tell a story about their lives and the environment they inhabit. This is not a polished, idealized image, but a raw slice of life, capturing a specific moment and place. Frank elevates the mundane to the monumental, prompting us to consider the value and beauty in the ordinary.
