This is a page from Federico de Vinciolo's "Les Secondes Oeuvres," a Venetian book of lace patterns. The design features a series of squares, each filled with symmetrical, floral-like motifs rendered in delicate needlework. These patterns carry echoes of ancient symbols. The arrangement of squares, reminiscent of a grid or matrix, has appeared throughout history in diverse cultures. The floral patterns, seemingly innocent, recall the cross, a potent symbol of faith and intersection. We see how this design resurfaces in Coptic textiles and even in the layout of Roman city plans, each instance carrying its own cultural weight, yet bound by an underlying sense of order and perhaps even spiritual harmony. It reveals how symbols are never truly new but continuously reborn, shaped by the collective psyche and our unending search for meaning.
