Geldolph Adriaan Kessler made this photograph on gelatin silver bromide paper. I'm not sure about you but when I look at this picture, I wonder what these kids are thinking. They're all gathered around a table covered with books and writing stuff, probably on holiday in the Harz mountains. It's like a moment frozen in time. I try to imagine the photographer’s process - fiddling with his camera, telling the kids to stay still. Did he try to create a specific atmosphere or capture a spontaneous family moment? These old photographs always feel like paintings somehow - they remind me of artists like Gerhard Richter, who are interested in the relationship between painting and photography. It's all about how we see and remember things, how artists keep talking to each other across time, messing with styles, and remixing ideas.
