This photo album was assembled by Hendrik Herman van den Berg between 1921 and 1922. It’s this deep green colour, and has a little sunburst motif in the corner. You know, the beautiful thing about an album like this is it's a container of memories, a physical space where moments are preserved. When you hold it, you’re holding a piece of history, a collection of someone's life, loves and experiences. I’m imagining van den Berg carefully placing each photograph into the album, thinking about the stories they tell, the people in them, and the times they represent. What was he thinking when he carefully inscribed ‘1921-22’ in white ink? Maybe he was organizing his memories, curating his life, in a way we all do, whether we realize it or not. It reminds us of the conversations we have with the past, and how it shapes the present. It’s kind of like painting, constructing a place of reflection for ourselves and others. We’re always in conversation with each other, across time, inspiring each other.
