Editor: This photograph, "Untitled (WWI veterans)" by Ken Whitmire Associates, shows a group gathered around a table, seemingly at an event. The inverted tones give it an eerie, spectral quality. What symbols are most apparent to you? Curator: The American flag is potent, but consider the table itself. The table is an altar where memory is consecrated. It simultaneously unites and separates these men. What memories do they share, and what burdens do they carry individually? Editor: That’s a powerful way to think about it. Seeing it as an altar reframes the whole scene. I appreciate that. Curator: And what about the inverted tones? What emotions do they trigger in you? Editor: It makes me reflect on the shadow of war and its enduring presence. It brings forward hidden stories. Curator: Precisely. Visual symbols speak across time, echoing collective experiences. Hopefully we both brought forward some hidden stories.
