Tom Lovell made this painting, In the Garden, with what looks like oil on canvas. I am drawn to the slightly hazy, dreamlike quality. You can almost feel the humidity, and sense the quiet murmur of conversation. Looking closely, you can see how Lovell applied the paint, with these soft, blended strokes of color. The textures in the brick path and the folds of the women’s dresses are delicately rendered, not quite photo-real, more of a felt reality. The women are the focal point, their pale skin tones and pastel clothing contrast with the lush greens and vibrant flowers of the garden, it gives them an other worldly presence. The overall impression is one of serenity, like a lost afternoon. I am reminded of the work of John Singer Sargent, not only in subject matter, but also in his fluid brushwork and attention to light and atmosphere. Neither Lovell, nor Sargent, provide us with answers, instead, they offer us glimpses into moments that remain suspended in time.
