Roger Fenton, a pioneering British photographer, captured "Moscow, the Kremlin in the Distance" using the wet collodion process, a technique that defined early photography. As one of the first Western photographers to enter Russia, Fenton was commissioned to document the Crimean War and its aftermath. His visit coincided with a period of significant social and political change in Russia, as the country grappled with its identity in relation to the West. This photograph offers a glimpse into 19th-century Moscow, inviting reflection on Russia's complex relationship with its own history and global perception. It's a reminder of how photography can capture not just a place, but also the spirit and tensions of a changing world.
