Here is a painting by Pablo Picasso of a still life with a bust, palette, and guitar. Look at the sharp edges that define these objects. I can almost imagine Picasso circling the scene, his canvas becoming a battleground of perspectives. The objects are set against a beautiful blue backdrop, the lines of the window mirror the angles of the guitar. He probably took a brush loaded with black paint and carved out the guitar’s silhouette, adding a touch of mystery to the scene. I am struck by the contrast between the vibrant red tablecloth and the somber bust. Was Picasso trying to capture the tension between life and art, or perhaps the fleeting nature of beauty? I like how he seems to be in conversation with other artists, Cezanne, Braque, and Gris. Artists are always picking up where others have left off. The history of painting is a relay race.
