This 'Untitled' painting was made by John McLaughlin, and you can just tell he’s worked through it, pushed it around, and considered the surface and how the two colors interact. I really admire this artist's commitment to this really limited palette and the way he's created so much with so little! It must have been such a challenge to create something so reduced, and it makes me wonder what he was thinking when he was making it... Look how the black sections act kind of like anchors for the white, which feels almost like it’s floating. It makes me think about negative space and all the different ways we can see, and the relationships between shapes. It's like a minimalist poem. I love it when painting is like a verb – it's alive and humming! And it reminds us that art is always in conversation, and that we can find new ways of thinking about painting, seeing, and experiencing the world.
