Mustafa Duzgunman created ‘Gelgit’ using the traditional Turkish art of Ebru, or paper marbling. Pigments are carefully dripped and manipulated on a water bath, then transferred to paper to create unique, swirling patterns. Here, the artist coaxes the dyes into a tight vertical ripple. The colors —blues, oranges, yellows, and greens— create a sense of movement across the surface. Ebru demands a delicate balance of control and chance. The artist must skillfully guide the pigments, but the unpredictable nature of the medium ensures that no two prints are ever exactly alike. Traditionally, Ebru has been used for centuries to decorate books and documents, elevating everyday surfaces with careful attention to detail. By understanding the historical craft context of Ebru, we can appreciate how Duzgunman transformed a humble material into a captivating work of art. This reminds us that true creativity lies not just in the final product, but in the artist's engagement with material processes and cultural traditions.
