Curatorial notes

This photograph, "Portret van een onbekende man verkleed als clown" was created by Henri de Louw using a camera and photographic paper. The sepia tonality, a signature of early photography, imbues the image with a sense of nostalgia, while the material qualities of the photographic paper, its texture and weight, contribute to its status as a precious object. Early photography was a labor-intensive process; each print required careful attention and expertise. The act of dressing in a clown costume can be seen as a form of labor itself, and the social context of this performance becomes intertwined with the photographic process, reflecting broader issues of class, entertainment, and the commodification of leisure. Considering the materials, the making, and its cultural context, allows us to appreciate its historical depth, and question traditional assumptions about art and craft.
