Editor: This print, by the British School, is currently untitled. The rendering is quite pastoral, but there’s something unsettling about the sky. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I see a landscape wrestling with the anxieties of its time. The Industrial Revolution was transforming the British countryside, displacing people and disrupting traditional ways of life. Do you see how the church spire is so small? Editor: Yes, it's almost overwhelmed by nature. Curator: Exactly. It’s a critique of the established order, of institutions that failed to protect the vulnerable. The artist uses the pastoral scene to ask: who truly benefits from progress? Editor: That's a powerful interpretation. I never would have considered that! Curator: Art often holds a mirror up to society, reflecting its hopes and its discontents.
