Johannes Tavenraat made this sketch of figures in a lane in the woods of Cleves with graphite on paper. Here, the physical properties of graphite, its softness and darkness, allows for quick, preliminary marks to capture an initial impression. With his pencil, Tavenraat is able to render tonal modulations by layering hatch marks, creating an overall soft texture to the image. But consider what this work represents beyond its subject. In the 19th century, the mass production of pencils, with their wood casings protecting a manufactured graphite core, facilitated widespread drawing practices. While painting remained the dominant art form, the humble pencil enabled a more democratic approach to image-making. With the combination of readily accessible materials and the immediacy of mark-making, "Figuren op een laan in de bossen van Kleef" embodies the accessibility of art and the spirit of exploration that democratized artistic expression.
