Curator: Here we see "Come, go! We'll stay there until tomorrow: a ball is always the same thing!, p. 17", a lithograph by Paul Gavarni. Editor: Oh, it's a mood, isn't it? A young woman and an older man, clearly not vibing with each other. You can feel the tension. Curator: Indeed. Gavarni uses a very linear approach, delineating forms with a sharp, almost acidic line. The contrast between the soft dress and the rigid suit is notable. Editor: Her dress almost blends into the background, while he’s all angles and sharp edges. Feels like a visual representation of their contrasting desires, maybe? Curator: One could argue the artist employs the contrast to highlight societal constraints placed upon the female figure. Editor: Perhaps. Or maybe he just had a funny bone and saw the humor in family gatherings. Either way, it's a potent little piece. Curator: A curious study in contrasts, certainly. Editor: Exactly! A little bit mordant, a little bit sweet, very Gavarni.
