Curator: Lech Jankowski created this drawing, "Mnisi. Chór butelkowy," in 2019. The medium appears to be graphite or a similar drawing material on paper. Editor: Immediately, I'm struck by the visual density—the composition is almost claustrophobic. There’s an unsettling uniformity in the repetition of the faces. Curator: The faces, which compose the entirety of this pyramidal shape, certainly demand close attention. There is a remarkable degree of variation within the repetition. Notice the minute shifts in expression, the angles of the heads. Editor: That structural organization interests me—a kind of hierarchical society or collective illustrated using this shape. It reminds me of social hierarchies visualized throughout art history, perhaps deliberately echoing similar visual motifs, such as depictions of the divine with saints arranged geometrically. The repetition almost dehumanizes them, stripping individuality for the sake of social commentary, perhaps? Curator: It's also compelling from a formal perspective—the texture is entirely reliant on the artist’s mark-making; light and shadow define depth within the composition and the tonality builds a mood, using grayscale as opposed to a full color spectrum. Editor: Right, and that artistic choice— the reliance on black and white— intensifies the somber feel of the work. Is it then pointing at historical figures or current events? Curator: Without more background context on Jankowski's practice and intentions, my read on the social critique is at an interpretative risk. Although from my own observation of its formal and constructional choices the pyramid does appear intentionally unstable. Note that a solid foundation is somewhat missing to bring its symbolic and visual form home. Editor: A "bottle choir", considering all these, certainly evokes a very critical stance of society in these dark visual conditions, as much as the aesthetic appeal is a hook. I find it intriguing how a seemingly simple sketch can convey such a weight of meaning. Curator: Indeed, it showcases the capacity of a single drawing to stimulate significant consideration. Editor: Thank you.
