This depiction of the battle between Dutch and English frigates was created in 1781 by Sasaya. Look at how the ships dominate the scene, their imposing presence a symbol of power and conflict. Throughout history, ships have been potent symbols, evoking journeys, exploration, and, as we see here, warfare. In ancient cultures, ships were often associated with the journey of the soul after death. But here, the naval vessels are staging grounds for violent confrontation. Observe the smoke billowing from the ships, an emblem of destruction and chaos, reminiscent of the psychological weight of war. In many cultures, smoke is also used as a purification offering, although in this case, the smoke is one of destruction, and the sea receives the souls of fallen sailors, a tragic dance between progress and devastation. These symbols resonate with our collective memory, engaging us on a subconscious level. This painting exemplifies the cyclical nature of symbols, continually resurfacing and evolving, capturing the complex interplay between our past and present.
